Kings' offense ignites in 5-4 victory over Preds

The Los Angeles Kings walked away from Bridgestone Arena with a 5-4 victory over the Nashville Predators on Tuesday night in front of the 18th sellout crowd of the season. Justin Williams led the Kings to victory with two goals on the night in what was a bit of a quirky game.

Los Angeles got on the board 6:16 into the first period when Williams scored from the corner to put the Kings up 1-0. Pekka Rinne misplayed the puck behind the net and the puck went in off of his skate. It was just the beginning of what was a forgettable night for the Finnish netminder.

Patric Hornqvist tied the game at one for the Predators with just over a minute remaining in the first period, but Williams would respond again for Los Angeles to give the Kings a 2-1 lead heading into the second period.

"We scored to get it tied up, and they didn't even finish announcing our goal and they score. To me, that's not acceptable," said Predators Head Coach Barry Trotz.

The second period would prove to be a wild one. Nashville tied the game at two on a beautiful snipe from Martin Erat. Los Angeles responded just three minutes later, however, with a one-timer from the slot. Sergei Kostitsyn would tie the game once again for Nashville at 14:05 of the second period on a simple wrist shot that beat Jonathan Quick low on the blocker side.

Los Angeles would come out firing in the third period. They scored two quick goals to take a 5-3 lead. Hornqvist would add another goal for the Predators at 14:42 of the third to pull the Predators within one, but that would be as close as they would get. The Kings got a much-needed 5-4 win to pull within one point of the Pacific Division lead.

"It was tough for us, especially starting the third. We've got to be better. Five goals against isn't good enough. That's not going to win hockey games, and we know that," said Predators centerman Paul Gaustad.

Jordin Tootoo was given a game misconduct at 13:19 of the third period for making contact with an official. It is unclear whether or not he will receive any additional discipline from the NHL.

After giving up his fifth goal of the night, Rinne was pulled from the game in favor of Anders Lindback. It was the fifth time this season that Rinne has been pulled from a game.

"It just wasn't (Rinne's) night. We weren't helping him a whole lot. You've got to help him in the crease area better. You've got to clear pucks, have your man a little firmer. Four is usually my limit with (Rinne) and I thought we still had a lot of game to go with, and I thought I'd give him one more," Trotz said.

Nashville will try to move on from this game and rebound against Colorado on Thursday night. The Avalanche defeated the Minnesota Wild by a 7-1 score on Tuesday night to continue their push toward playoff positioning.

"We have to bounce back and do what we can do to win the game," Gaustad said.

  1. Technical point: JT22 actually got a simple misconduct (10 minutes). He would have been able to come back in OT--but it is standard practice to send 'em straight to the dressing room if the current period will run out before the penalty.
