Josi plays on top defensive pairing in 4-1 loss to Detroit

The Nashville Predators were defeated by the Detroit Red Wings by a 4-1 score on Monday night in front of a sold out Bridgestone Arena. Ryan Ellis made his NHL debut for the Predators tonight, due to Shea Weber being out of the lineup for the first time this season.

Valtteri Filppula got the scoring started for the Red Wings when he fired a snap shot past Pekka Rinne. Filppula was streaking down the right side of the zone, and Henrik Zetterberg hit him with a great pass. Filppula was able to quickly snipe one past Rinne for the goal. The Predators went into the second period down one goal.

Pavel Datsyuk gave the Red Wings a 2-0 lead on a nifty wrap-around attempt. The play was originally ruled as no goal, but a linesman over-ruled the original call on the ice and called it a goal. The play went to review, and the good goal call on the ice stood.

"I don't know what happened. The ref pointed at the faceoff so that's no goal. I don't know what they saw on the video and it was in, but there's nothing we can do. We just have to respond better after those goals and get one back right after," said Predators defenseman Roman Josi.

Nashville didn't respond well at all after the goal by Datsyuk. Danny Cleary added another goal for the Red Wings just 13 seconds later, and put Detroit up 3-0. Filppula added another goal in the third period for the Red Wings, and Jonathon Blum scored for the Predators. Detroit won the game 4-1 for their second victory over the Predators in the 2011-2012 season.

Due to Weber's absence, Josi started the game on a defensive pairing with Ryan Suter, and played most of the game with him. They seemed to have pretty good chemistry on the ice for two players who have never played together before.

"I thought it was pretty good. I didn't think they had a lot of chances. We basically played against the Datsyuk line all night, and I thought we played well. They scored on the one, and I don't know if it was in or not, but yeah I thought it was ok," Josi said.

While Josi played a pretty solid game, it's overwhemingly apparent that Nashville missed Weber in this game. Weber took a huge hit against the Dallas Stars on Friday, and left morning skate early on Monday morning. His absence against the Red Wings really seemed to negatively affect the Predators.

"If you're missing your best player and your captain that's always a big loss, and he plays a lot of minutes against top guys every night. It's a big loss for us, but still we had to focus on the game and play without him," Josi said.

Nashville will hope to forget about this loss to Detroit and focus their attention on Wednesday night's tilt with the Minnesota Wild at Bridgestone Arena.

"If you have a tough loss, it's always good to play one or two days after. I hope we're going to be better on Wednesday," Josi said.
