Preds leave Rinne out to dry in loss to Oilers

The Edmonton Oilers defeated the Nashville Predators by a 3-1 score on Monday night in a game that was truly dominated by the Oilers.

Nashville had 12 shots in the entire game. Edmonton controlled the flow of play for the entirety of the game, and could have scored 15 goals if it weren't for the play of Pekka Rinne.

The Predators actually got on the board first in this game. Sergei Kostitsyn brought the puck in the zone on the rush and wristed one that squeezed through Nikolai Khabibulin and into the net.

In the third period, Edmonton would tie the game when Ryan Nugent-Hopkins delivered a great pass to Taylor Hall who put it past Rinne. The Oilers would take the lead 2:02 later when Ryan Smyth was left all alone and scored to put Edmonton up 2-1.

Former Pred Ryan Jones would add an empty-netter to ice the game, and the Oilers walked away with a 3-1 victory.

After the game, Jerred Smithson lashed out to Josh Cooper of the Tennessean. Smithson called out his team, and said the effort wasn't there. He also said that, if it weren't for Rinne, the Preds wouldn't have a point yet.

These are strong words from the Predators veteran forward, but they have a lot of merit to them. Nashville hasn't played well in any game so far this year. They got two wins to open the season, but were not the better team in either game. There is a lot to work on going forward.
